The Hazlehurst House

The Hazlehurst House is located in McDonough, GA and is a special events facility.  We restored this beautiful home built in 1829.  Since opening in 2000, The Hazlehurst House has hosted many weddings, receptions, corporate events and meetings, special holiday and seasonal events, as well as open for brunch and lunch occasionally.  This facility offers its clients many services including a flower shop, bakery services and photography studio.  The Hazlehurst House is a stately manor that represents the charm and character of early America.

In 1829, Abner Davis built the home as a summer getaway from the heat of Savannah, but eventually made it his permanent residence.   The federal style home was built on a solid foundation of hand-hewn beams and solid heart pine floors.  Each room was decorated with a beautiful mantle and fireplace, high ceilings, and antique timber walls.  The solid wood doors each came with their own individual lock for fear of Indian attacks, and the hand blown window panes show markings of what is said to be soldiers during the War between the States.  One unique feature is a closet in the foyer with the inside still stained the original color.  The color was derived by crushing mustard and berry seeds to make a stain - the color is still bright!

The land is replete with magnolia, oak and cedar trees that were just seedlings when the land was granted to Ezekiel Cloud, a Revolutionary Soldier, in 1827.   The rear of the manor is graced with a knot garden of English boxwoods said to be 170 years old - one of the oldest in Georgia in its original setting.

The treasury of history found in the home ranges from original deeds and precious love letters dated from 1860 to the housing of Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy.

Listed in the book, The Mother of All Counties, by Margaret Rainer, The Hazlehurst House holds its own as being a significant structure of history as well those who have graced its halls.
